Common questions

What files does Paperclip open?

Outlook .msg message files, winmail.dat (TNEF) attachments, .eml files, and complete .pst archives. On Mac, you can open and search an archive without importing it or sending anything off your Mac. Paperclip also has a viewer for iPhone and iPad. Messages nested inside other messages open in place, and calendar invites found inside winmail.dat can be exported as working .ics files.

Do I have to pay to read a file?

No. Viewing is free forever. During the launch period, conversion, batch export, and Quick Look are free too. The launch lasts at least through October 2026, and anyone who downloads Paperclip during it keeps those features free forever. Later they become a one-time purchase for new downloads.

Is a subscription coming?

No. Paperclip will never be a subscription.

A file won’t open. What now?

That’s a bug, and I treat it like one. Use the in-app report (it describes the file’s structure to me without ever including its content), or email the address above and tell me what happened. If something in a file truly can’t be recovered, Paperclip will already have told you what and why.

Where does my mail go when I open it?

Nowhere. Everything happens on your Mac. No telemetry, no analytics, no account, no server. The privacy policy is short and worth the read.

Refunds?

There is nothing to buy during the launch period. When the one-time purchase becomes available, purchases and refunds will run through Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com. If you get stuck, email me and I’ll help you find the right path.
